How It Works

Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a sclerosing agent directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and the blood within it to clot. Over time the vessel slowly turns into scar tissue that fades from view.

Before Treatment

  • Avoid using makeup on the day of your appointment.
  • Avoid tanning or the use of self tanning creams for two weeks prior.
  • If you regularly use medications or supplements, there is an increased risk of bruising in the treated area.
  • Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin two weeks prior.

After Treatment

  • Patients typically experience some redness and discomfort in the treatment area during and after treatments. This is normal and usually no down time is needed.
  • We may recommend compression stockings to be worn for up to two weeks if your condition is more serious.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise immediately after treatment and high impact activity for three to five days.
  • Avoid heat for at least 2 days - including hot tubs, hot showers and no UVR sun exposure for at least 7 days.
  • Avoid products that may irritate the skin, such as astringents.
  • Daily use of broad spectrum SPF30 sunscreen is recommended
