Melanoma Myths vs. Facts: What You Really Need to Know About Skin Cancer
May is Melanoma Awareness Month—a time to focus on education, not alarm. At our clinic, we believe in empowering you with the facts so you can take care of your skin confidently and proactively.
Let’s bust some common myths about melanoma and share the facts that really matter.
MYTH #1: “I don’t need to worry because I don’t spend much time in the sun.”
FACT:
Melanoma isn’t only caused by sun exposure. Genetics, a history of sunburns (even from childhood), and even indoor UV exposure (like tanning beds) can increase your risk. Plus, daily incidental sun exposure—like walking your dog or sitting near a window—adds up over time.
MYTH #2: “I have darker skin, so I’m not at risk for skin cancer.”
FACT:
While melanin does provide some natural protection, anyone can develop melanoma. In fact, it’s often detected later in people with deeper skin tones, which can make it more dangerous. Early detection matters for everyone.
MYTH #3: “Melanoma always looks like a dark, irregular mole.”
FACT:
Melanoma can appear in many forms—including red, pink, or even skin-toned lesions. It may look like a new spot or a change in an existing one. This is why annual skin checks are so important—even if nothing seems “off” to you.
MYTH #4: “If I had melanoma, I’d feel it or notice symptoms.”
FACT:
Melanoma is often painless and subtle in its early stages. You may not feel a thing, which is why visual checks—by yourself and your provider—are key to catching it early.
MYTH #5: “If something is suspicious, I’ll wait and see if it changes.”
FACT:
Waiting can be risky. Melanoma can grow and spread quickly. If you notice a new spot or changes in size, shape, or colour—get it checked. It’s better to be safe and proactive than delay care.
Knowledge is power—and prevention is the best first step.
