Understanding the Stages of Menopause: Guidance from Dr. Carin Strydom

Menopause is a natural part of every woman’s life, but it’s also one that’s often misunderstood, under-discussed, and far too rarely supported with compassion.

Dr. Carin Strydom and her team believe that women deserve to feel informed, empowered, and truly heard as they move through this transition. That’s why our women’s health team, led by Dr. Carin Strydom, is dedicated to providing both medical expertise and genuine understanding every step of the way.

The Three Stages of Menopause

1. Perimenopause
This stage typically begins in a woman’s 40s, though for some, symptoms can start as early as 35. Hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone, fluctuate, leading to symptoms like irregular periods, night sweats, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and decreased libido.
Many women find this stage the hardest because it’s unpredictable and confusing. Recognizing the signs early allows for proactive support through lifestyle changes, hormone or non-hormonal therapies, and understanding care.

2. Menopause
Menopause is officially diagnosed when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. While this marks the end of reproductive years, it also signals a new beginning for self-awareness and health prioritization.

Hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and changes in skin, mood, or metabolism are common, but they’re not something you have to “just live with.”

There are effective, evidence-based options to help you feel like yourself again.

3. Postmenopause
After menopause, hormone levels stabilize at a lower level. Some symptoms ease, while others, such as changes to bone density, skin elasticity, or urinary health, can become more noticeable.

This is an important time to focus on long-term wellness, from bone and heart health to skin vitality and mental well-being.
