A technique commonly used to reduce the appearance of acne scars, excisions and subcision are minor procedures to either completely remove the scar or to lift the connecting scar tissue to reduce the appearance.

Scar excision involves removing a small margin of the normal tissue along with the scar in order to get normal tissue at the wound margins, and closing the wound to hopefully result in a thinner, less noticeable scar. Scar subcision involves inserting a small needle under the skin and maneuvering it in different directions to separate the top layer of skin from the scar tissue below. The healing process stimulates collagen resulting in a less depressed scar.
